Abstract

Thyroglossal duct cysts accounts for approximately 70% of congenital neck abnormalities but carcinoma arising in a thyroglossal duct cyst is a rare event. The first case of carcinoma of the thyroglossal duct cyst in the English literature was reported by Owen and Ingelby in 1927. A review of the world literature reveals that there are about 100 histologically documented cases of malignancy originating from thyroglossal duct cyst.
Papillary adenocarcinoma constitute 75-85% of all cases reported but there are only 7 cases of invasive squamous cell carcinoma arising from benign thyroglossal remnant squamous epithelium. The origin of thyroglossal duct carcinoma has been a source of controversy because many cases so reported may in fact have originated in adjacent thyroid tissue.
Recently we experienced a case of squamous carcinoma in situ arising in thyroglossal duct cyst and reviewed the literatures.
